Sales Tax: The Extra Bit
Sales tax gets added at the register, so the total is higher than the tag.
In lots of places, the price on the shelf is not the price you actually pay. At the register a sales tax gets added on top, usually a percent of the price, which the store collects and passes on to the government. Rates are different from place to place, and some things, like groceries in certain states, may be taxed less or not at all. That is why $20.00 on the label can turn into $21.20 at the register. 🧾
Words to know
5Sales tax
Extra money added to the price when you buy something in a shop. An $8 shirt at 5% tax costs $8.40.
Sticker price
The price written on the label or the shelf. The $8 on the shirt, before tax.
Total
The full amount the register asks for: the price plus the tax. $8 plus $0.40 is a total of $8.40.
Percent
A way of saying 'out of 100'. 5% means 5 for every 100, so 5% of $8 is $0.40.
Receipt
The paper or screen that lists what you bought and the tax you paid. It is how you check the $8.40 was right.
