Lesson 38 · Written for kid, teen, and little
Subscription Creep
Small monthly charges are easy to forget and they pile up fast.
A subscription charges you a small amount over and over, usually every month, without asking you again. Because each charge is small, it is easy to sign up and then forget the money is still leaving. Twelve months of $9.99 adds up to about $120, even for something you barely open. Reading your statement and cancelling what you do not use is how people take that money back. 🔁
Words to know
5Subscription
A payment that repeats, usually every month, to keep using something. Like $10 a month for music.
Free trial
A short time when something is free before the charges start. Free for 7 days, then $10 a month unless you stop it.
Auto-renew
When a subscription charges you again all by itself. Nobody asks you first — it just happens on the same day each month.
Cancel
Telling a company to stop taking the payments. Four forgotten $10 subscriptions cost $480 a year.
Statement
A list from a bank or card showing every payment that went out. Reading it is how you spot the app you forgot about.
Match each subscription word to what it means.
